New Year – New Habits There’s nothing new about the idea of building habits in order to succeed in anything in life. A hockey player will be in the habit of practicing for thousands of hours before becoming a great player. We don’t deserve greatness just because we want it. We have to work for it. And it’s not easy. “It took me 19 years to become an overnight success.” Muhammed Ali There are many great books about building habits. I’d recommend Atomic Habits by James Clear. But here are a few helpful tips that I’ve used along the way. I’m sure you’ll find these same tips in many videos and books on building habits. Tip #1: Stop Forcing it If something is a habit, then it’s something you do without thinking. Checking social media is a habit for a lot of people. So is binge watching Netflix, sleeping in late (assuming you aren’t working late), eating sugary foods, lazing around the house for the weekend, etc. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you’re thinking you should be eating better, going to the gym, taking a hike in the bush, and sleeping less for more time (note: I’m all for 8 hours of sleep a night). You kick yourself for another weekend of doing nothing when you had so many plans Friday night. Tip #2: Small Steps – Easy Successes We release dopamine (the feel good hormone) when we accomplish tasks. The great part is, dopamine is released even if the tasks are small. So set yourself up for success by planning small steps toward your big habits. If your goal is to complete a chin-up one day and you’ve identified a number of movements to help you get there, do one of them every day (and listen to your body if it’s telling you that you’re doing too much, too soon).
